چکیده

In acid soils, soluble inorganic phosphorus is fixed by aluminium and iron. To overcome this problem, acid soils are limed to fix aluminium and iron but this practice is not economical. The practice is also not environmentally friendly. This study was conducted to improve phosphorus availability using organic amendments (biochar and compost produced from chicken litter and pineapple leaves, resp.) to fix aluminium and iron instead of phosphorus. Amending soil with biochar or compost or a mixture of biochar and compost increased total phosphorus, available phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus fractions (soluble inorganic phosphorus, aluminium bound inorganic phosphorus, iron bound inorganic phosphorus, redundant soluble inorganic phosphorus, and calcium bound phosphorus), and organic phosphorus. This was possible because the organic amendments increased soil pH and reduced exchangeable acidity, exchangeable aluminium, and exchangeable iron. The findings suggest that the organic amendments altered soil chemical properties in a way that enhanced the availability of phosphorus in this study. The amendments effectively fixed aluminium and iron instead of phosphorus, thus rendering phosphorus available by keeping the inorganic phosphorus in a bioavailable labile phosphorus pool for a longer period compared with application of Triple Superphosphate without organic amendments.

Applying Biochar and Mineral Amendments to Remediate the Chemical Properties of a Saline-Sodic Soil

The present study was intended to improve the chemical properties of a saline-sodic soil using the individual application of alfalfa residue and two biochars produced from sugarcane bagasse and walnut shell, at the weighting ratio of 5%; their concomitant application with gypsum, aluminum sulfate and the mixture of these two chemical amendments was considered. The experiment was conducted in th...

An inter-laboratory study to test the ability of amendments to reduce the availability of Cd, Pb, and Zn in situ.

An international inter-laboratory research program investigated the effectiveness of in situ remediation of soils contaminated by cadmium, lead and zinc, measuring changes in soil and soil solution chemistry, plants and soil microbiota. A common soil, from mine wastes in Jasper County MO, was used. The soil was pH 5.9, had low organic matter (1.2 g kg(-1) C) and total Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrati...

Ecological risk assessment of organic waste amendments using the species sensitivity distribution from a soil organisms test battery.

Safe amendment rates (the predicted no-effect concentration or PNEC) of seven organic wastes were estimated from the species sensitivity distribution of a battery of soil biota tests and compared with different realistic amendment scenarios (different predicted environmental concentrations or PEC). None of the wastes was expected to exert noxious effects on soil biota if applied according eithe...

This study investigated the effect of the inoculation of the soil with some phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) on inorganic P fractions in sandy soil enriched with inorganic and organic amendments. A factorial experiment arrangement was performed in a completely randomized design with three replications, using two factors: microorganisms (control, Entrobacter cloacae, Brevundimonas, a...

Recycling of wastes in areca based cropping system

Continuous use of chemical fertilizers has deteriorated the soil health and made the use of organic matter essential to restore the soil health and productivity. The availability of organic matter is again a problem because of the increase in area under crop cultivation. Thus recycling of the available organic wastes from the existing gardens especially in perennial crops gets more importance. ...
